Our Story

Our beginning

Rising Pheasant Farms FINAL (Internet-Ready).mov

Founded in 2009 by Carolyn Leadley and Jack VanDyke, Rising Pheasant Farms is a family-owned and -operated urban farm and homestead on Detroit’s east side. We currently grow a variety of crops on 1/2 of an acre along with greenhouse microgreen production, which we sell to both retail and wholesale markets. We manage a passive solar hoophouse and have plans to expand our field production, including adding a second hoophouse in 2024. Our farm operates based on a low-resource, non-fossil fuel model which includes organic/regenerative practices, no-till soil management and bicycle transportation. Our mission includes increasing fresh food access for the Detroit community, as well as developing a slow-living urban homestead model for living a richer, simpler life in tune with Nature.
